Position Description

Applicants seeking a Volunteer Firefighter position with the Town do not need to have any prior fire service experience, and must simply submit an application and meet the requirements listed below:

1. Must be at least 18 years old.

2. Must possess a current, valid driver's license.

3. Must attend three (3) consecutive Training Meetings with the department. Training Meetings are held every Monday night at 7:00pm at Fire Station 23, 200 Wilmington Avenue, Surf City, NC 28445. Applicants must take the initiative to attend these meetings on their own after their application is submitted as they will not be formally invited.

4. Must complete a background check* and/or drug screening.

After attending three consecutive meetings, the department’s membership will vote to either accept or not accept each applicant as a new Volunteer member at the next business meeting. Once voted into membership, new Volunteers must serve a six-month introductory period, and work to complete the necessary training required to become an active Volunteer Firefighter within the department.

*Although a disqualification is possible, in accordance with federal and state laws, a previous conviction does not automatically disqualify an applicant from consideration for becoming a Volunteer Firefighter with the Town of Surf City. Depending on a variety of factors (for example, the nature of the position, the nature of the conviction, age of the candidate when the illegal activity occurred), the candidate may still be eligible for becoming a Volunteer with the Town of Surf City.
